Foothill Transit is the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley’s primary public transportation provider, serving over 15 million customers annually and covering over 327-square miles of Los Angeles County. The agency, entering its 19th year of service, has launched some of its most ambitious and innovative projects in its history. In addition to the continued conversion of its 306-vehicle fleet to compressed natural gas fuel (CNG), the agency is debuted advanced on-board technology with automatic vehicle location via global positioning satellites, automatic passenger counters, digital video surveillance, and an enhanced dispatch monitoring system. The program, named SMARTBus, launched in conjunction with another new and ground-breaking service: The Silver Streak. Designed as the region’s first “rail on rubber” transit system, the Silver Streak is a high capacity, high frequency people mover, utilizing 60-foot streamlined and articulated CNG vehicles to transport customers to points between Montclair and downtown Los Angeles. Established in 1988, Foothill Transit has enjoyed both local and national recognition for outstanding service, including the Outstanding Transit System Award from the American Public Transportation Association in 1993 and 1995, the Bus Safety Gold Award in 2001, and first place awards in safety from the Los Angeles Chapter of The National Safety Council in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2001.
